A Sunnyvale man was arrested and accused of breaking a bottle of tequila over another man’s head in a fight outside the Shop ‘n Save liquor store in Mountain View over the weekend, police said.

According to Liz Wylie, public information officer for the Mountain View Police Department, the fight started shortly after 9:30 p.m. outside the Shop ‘n Save, located at 779 Evelyn Ave.

Just before the fight, five men, who had been drinking, bought a bottle of tequila at the Shop ‘n Save, Wylie said. Shortly thereafter, a 19-year-old Sunnyvale man and two friends entered the store.

When the 19-year-old and his friends left the store, the group of five men started a fight with them, Wylie said. One of them began punching the 19-year-old, and soon the others jumped in.

At some point, Wylie said, police believe Edwin Figueroa, 24, from Sunnyvale, hit the 19-year-old in the head with the tequila bottle, breaking the bottle in the process. This caused “a very large, deep laceration to his head.” The victim was dazed, but not knocked out, Wylie said.

The group of five men then allegedly stole the 19-year-old’s baseball hat and fled in a white Honda, Wylie said. A witness took down the Honda’s license plate number.

With the help of surveillance footage and the witness’s description of the car, Mountain View and Sunnyvale police tracked down Figeuroa and another man they believe to be involved in the fight, locating them in the 100 block of Bernardo Avenue in Sunnyvale.

The victim’s hat was recovered inside the Honda and Figeuroa and Gerson Landaverde, 26, of Mountain View, were both arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, Wylie said. The other men involved in the fight are still being sought by police.

“We do not know what the motivation was for this crime,” Wylie said. “The victim does not know why the suspects started a fight with him, but alcohol was a factor to one extent or another.”
