Plans for electrified Caltrain

Original post made on May 5, 2014

Once again, it seems that special interests are leading the way into any substantial changes in our society. What are you smoking Mario? The only way third rail power systems are feasible is with total grade separation and a secure right of way, something Caltrain won't see for at least a decade. Then you are talking about creating new technology when there are proven off the shelf solutions and rolling stock.

As for propulsion technology, the only reason the US favors diesel railroads is cheap oil and vast distances that are not practical to electrify. The Northeast US has had electric trains since the 20's as has most of Europe.

The bottom line here is that people need to get over this weird cult like fascination with not cutting trees! They grow back! They are renewable! I bet you even live in a wood house! Until you ditch your little condo for a mud hut, don't be a hypocrite about cutting trees in the name of progress....
