A robbery suspect allegedly armed with a knife died after a Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety officer shot him this morning, public safety officials said.

Officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at a liquor store in the 1100 block of Tasman Drive at 11:10 a.m., public safety Capt. Jeff Hunter said.

Officers found a suspect armed with a knife. One officer opened fire, hitting the suspect, Deputy Chief Dave Pitts said.

The man in his 20s was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Pitts said. The name of the suspect and what led up to the shooting were not immediately released.

No officers were injured in the incident, according to Pitts.

  1. ‘Hunter did not immediately know what led to the shooting.”

…I’m guessing the knife-wielding suspect led to the shooting.

  2. In these days of police being videotaped planting weapons on dead “suspects”, the newspapers really need to say which witnesses are claiming the deceased person was armed.

  3. Agreed. MV Voice, please don’t be a stenographer for police claims. Do your due diligence (aka Journalism) and ask questions of others. When a man dies at the hands of police an independent press should be aggressive in trying to discover and publish what actually transpired.

Not saying there’s anything suspicious in this case, just that you shouldn’t presumptively believe the police any more than anyone else. Skepticism of power is the hallmark of a free press. As George Orwell (allegedly) said, “Journalism is printing something someone else doesn’t want printed. Everything else is Public Relations.”

In any event, there were witnesses on the local TV news that saw it go down as police described
