More MV students enrolled in higher math

School districts across the state are minimizing the role of parent advocacy in determining what classes students get placed in, but that hasn't slowed the rate of Mountain View students taking higher math.

I would like to see the student data that Cathy Baur is talking about, and some other MVWSD middle school math public documents. However - my requests for these public documents, from late May - have been held up by the MVWSD administration. What a shame, that I have to ask in public! Oh Well! An odd definition of transparency, has overtaken MVWSD leadership in the last year.

I continue waiting, over more than 110 days, for these types of public documents that LASD and the County Office of Education took only 22 and 10 days respectively, to provide (CA Public Records Act requests in May).

MVLA High School administrators have said and reported that MVWSD student math performance "is spotty" and often needs remedial work that LASD students do not need. Small wonder - that MVLA district may see significant slippage, once students try to depend on their MVWSD middle school math background. In a Stanford Education School research data base - MVWSD has one of the lowest 20 district in the nation (not lowest 20% percentile group) academic GAP ratings. Relative to the nation, our MVWSD Hispanic students are suffering. They continue to suffer.

Even our 'great' Geometry in 8th students (higher math on the fastest track) have historically shown major deficiencies. The State-wide CA Community College geometry readiness test, (GR45A06) administered to Geometry students in Fall of 2013, showed "adequate preparation in that topic" was <50% for most of the topics, and most of the Geometry students at the two schools. THAT MEANS: mot of the Geometry students that were admitted to MVWSD Geometry in 2013 - would NOT have been admitted to Geometry at Foothill College.

When Public Policy - appears and functions like MAXIMIZING "the role of parent advocacy in determining what classes students get placed in" the Target ELL and Economically disadvantage student needs get left out. As a Castro mom told the Board in public in 2014 - the district lies to the Hispanic parents on how well their kids are doing - and how many resources are being devoted to their kids.

What does the MVWSD administration have to hide and why are they stonewalling, greater than 3 months, a legitimate Public Records Request on middle school math tracks and testing?
