The police chief of the Los Altos Police Department announced his retirement, department officials said Wednesday.

Chief Tuck Younis will retire effective Dec. 17 after nine years at the helm.

Younis served for 29 years in the San Jose Police Department before joining the Los Altos Police Department in 2007.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the residents of Los Altos,” Younis said in a statement. “This is a wonderful community with wonderful people living and serving here.”

Los Altos Capt. Andy Galea will take over as police chief when Younis retires. Galea has been overseeing the department’s day-to-day operations. Galea became Younis’ deputy in 2009.

  1. We are so sad to read that Chief Younis is retiring. He has been a wonderful community leader. His family’s gain is our loss. Thank you, Tuck!
