A controversial plan to reroute flight paths to San Francisco International Airport is nearing decision time. After several meetings and testimony from a multitude of speakers, a special South Bay committee on Thursday, Nov. 17, is expected to vote on a preferred plan to rejigger routes to lessen aircraft noise.

The flight-path issue generated huge public outcry throughout the Peninsula and nearby areas. A string of community groups closely monitoring the issue have fiercely resisted any proposals that could shift flight paths and result in an increase in airplane noise over their neighborhoods. The committee compiled about a dozen different proposals for rearranging the air routes.

On a local level, the issue has sparked feuding between cities and counties not wanting to get stuck with the hot potato of increased aircraft traffic overhead. For example, a consultant report last month from Palo Alto proposed shifting a flight path above the city over to the east — right over to Mountain View’s airspace. Meanwhile, Midpeninsula communities have been at odds with Santa Cruz County over suggestions to move southern air routes further inland.

Like other cities, Mountain View officials have resisted any plans that would cause an increase in airplane noise for its residents.

The 12-member Select Committee on South Bay Arrivals is scheduled to meet for an expected final vote at 1 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the Palo Alto City Council Chambers at 250 Hamilton Ave.

  1. What is really sad about this is that Mountain View was never part of the select committee. We didn’t have representation and now Palo Alto is trying to shift their noise over to us as their solution to reducing noise. This is noise shifting which is not what the committee was supposed to do, I am truly sad to see that Palo Alto is trying to do this. I don’t believe it is an ethical solution to the noise problem.

Also this article is truly lacking in details.

  2. Supervisor Joe Simitian lives in? Palo Alto. So, are people allowed to speak to this rigged committee on November 17? And what happens after that?

  3. If things would stay the same, the existing route over the BAY would be followed. If anti-noise systems were added to the new turbofan engines, the low frequency droning noise would be mostly eliminated. The same noise cancelling system is used in many headphones could be applied to turbofan jet engines for a win-win solution. Isn’t a few pounds of noise cancelling equipment worth it?

  4. Judging by the aircraft noise we’ve been experiencing here all morning, I think the rerouting has occurred directly over our neighborhood. I feel as though I live at the airport.

  5. San Jose Mineta Airport jets have been making wide angle turns over Mountain View. I checked them out on the Flight Tracker app. No exaggeration, there is a jet flying over every 3 minutes, non stop. I have never been bothered by a few plane per day, even the loud ones out of Moffett, but when the rumbling never stops, it gets very disturbing.

  6. @John, unfortunately that link only reports back to SFO, it does not apply to SJC flights. I think you have to report each individual SJC flight thru their own website and it’s nowhere near as easy/convenient as the link you provided which happens to be a site run by an individual who got very tired of the noise and seems to know programming etc in order to make the ability to report flights happen.

Would be great if we had a MV techie create the same thing for SJC flights, anybody out there who could help with this?

  7. It’s easy enough to log in and start reporting. yes we are getting over flights from BOTH airports! Yikes! Can’t even take a peaceful walk without earplugs. And the noise is inside too. All day long.

We are also getting over flights from Surf Air landing at the San Carlos airport.
It is totally ridiculous to have this happening over our heads.
