Officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that they are terminating an agreement worth $929 million for the California High-Speed Rail project.

For years, California officials have envisioned a high-speed rail connection between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The announcement Tuesday was directed to Brian Kelly with the California High-Speed Rail Authority in a letter from the Federal Railroad Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The letter says the cancellation will be effective March 5. Also, federal officials said they are exploring legal options to force California to return $2.5 billion in federal funds already given to the state for the project, which federal officials called “defunct.”

On Feb. 12, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans to scale back high-speed rail to the Central Valley in his “State of the State” address. The project has developed many opponents in places such as Palo Alto, where the City Council passed a resolution that declared “no confidence” in the proposal in 2010.

  1. They should have to return the 2.5 billion, and immediately repeal the gas tax costing us 40 cents the gallon! Newsom can’t be trusted with that amount of dough.

  2. I agree that the money should ethically be returned to those who were forced to pay.
Gray Davis was voted out of office in part due to a requested $20 assessment on each car. Then Schwartzenegger did it, with the funds ostensibly going to the counties in which the cars were registered to fix local problems. What happened to all that money? El Camino is crumbling.

  3. @ William Hitchens – nobody stole the White House. He won it fair and square (and you might want to think about why that happened). Get over it and your TDS.

  4. Apollo / AAR just got $ 1.4 M for “Railroader II” Gee…wonder where the monies have gone ? Thanks y’all ! Since…

  5. Okay, “Yawn,” time to wake up. Trump most certainly DID NOT win the election “fair and square” (or maybe your idea of fairness is far different than what most of us were taught). He used and encouraged foreign interference, paid off mistresses to silence them (breaking campaign finance laws in the process), and is being investigated for a host of other transgressions. Numerous members of his campaign have been arrested and charged with crimes. He “won” because he played upon certain Americans’ hatred and fear and has used those powerful and vile tools to divide us and vilify and demonize immigrants, journalists, law enforcement, critics and anyone else he targets. You can admire him all you want — that’s what freedom is all about. But your “he won it fair and square” argument is utterly hollow and ignorant.

  6. Greg David said: “Caltrain electrification is still funded. There are multiple news outlets confirming this”

Given what happened with CalHSR and Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit (HART) is Caltrain electrification really funded or do they only have 1/2 – 1/3 of the money they really need to finish the project and hope they can force the public into throwing good money after bad into this local boondoggle?

A lot of taxpayers are going to have some serious buyers remorse before Caltrain electrification is finished.

  7. @Ty- oh please, I hear sour grapes talking.

“He used and encouraged foreign interference”- Never proven and Julian Assange has always maintained that he received the info from a DNC insider. But regardless of where the emails came from, they were real emails that exposed Hillary’s corruption. Exposure does not equal interference.

“paid off mistresses to silence them” – perhaps because he didn’t want his wife to know? And would “silencing” them be similar to Hillary threatening the women that Bill Clinton raped?

“and is being investigated for a host of other transgressions.” – Yes, the witch hunt continues…

“Numerous members of his campaign have been arrested and charged with crimes.” – Well gee, that’s unusual. Nobody in Hillary’s campaign have been charged with crimes? Oh wait, nobody is investigating crooked Hillary, her rigging of the primary, the Clinton Foundation, etc.

“He “won” because he played upon certain Americans’ hatred and fear” – would those certain people be the 50% of Americans that voted for him? Half the country is filled with hatred and fear? And the Hillary supporters are pure of heart, right?

“and has used those powerful and vile tools to divide us” – no actually Obama began the divisions by encouraging victimhood and class division but the libs have taken it to a new level with their hatred of anything Trump and their mission to vilify anyone who voted him and their mission to overturn his democratic election.

“and vilify and demonize immigrants- not immigrants, just illegal immigrants
“journalists – yes, because the biased and fake news is unprecedented and at this point constituting propaganda.
“law enforcement” – not true- he supports law enforcement. It’s the libs defying law enforcement, ICE, border patrol and establishing sanctuary cities and states that promote illegal activity.

“You can admire him all you want — that’s what freedom is all about.” – I don’t admire him but he won and I respect the process. As you say, that’s what freedom is all about. The corruption runs deep on all sides. As Assange said, choosing between Trump and Hillary was like choosing between syphilis and gonorrhea. All Americans made their choices and the result should be respected. If you don’t like the outcome you’ll have the opportunity to try again in 2020 but the vitriol being spewed upon Trump supporters is certainly not admirable behavior.

I’m sticking with he won it fair and square, at least as fair as anybody else wins in this country.

  8. Another nail in the pie-in-the-sky ignorant & idealistic HSR project madness. My lack of respect for the corrupt special interest groups who promote HSR madness is almost as great as my lack of respect for the monsters who have stolen and infested the White House. Both need to be legally terminated, the sooner the better.

  9. The President is used to winning civil cases in the courts against smaller companies because he can afford to (not) pay better lawyers. He’ll likely find that singling out projects in states that did not vote for him will not stand up in the present context. This is a set up for money to “claw back” for the wall. It likely won’t get any further than his other ideas. For now though, I’m just buying more Popcorn.
