Excellent news! I recently rode from Mountain View across the Dumbarton Bridge and this gap in the Bay Trail made for a big detour. Looking forward to riding straight out to the bridge.

This missing-link connection will also make it nicer for those of us who 'just take a hike'. My wife and I over this past season went walking at the OSD land out there, it was nice! And it will be even nicer with a longer-walk opportunity.

@Rachel G - unfortunately, I do not think this trail will get you to the Dumbarton Bridge any faster. It ends at University Ave, not at or near the Dumbarton.

Aww, that's disappointing. I had assumed, looking at the current trail map, that the gap they were closing was between the two current trails that almost meet. There's one that heads south from the base of the bridge, and another one that heads north through the Ravenswood Preserve and the ends of the two look to be about a quarter mile apart. That would have been the ideal connector, because it would avoid an extra distance to get to the bridge. Maybe there is private property in between and they couldn't get a right of way? Or maybe the marshland couldn't support a trail or bridge?
That said, at least the bike path along University and then Bayfront towards the bridge is separated from the car traffic on those roads, so this new connector will allow for reduced mingling with cars, even though it doesn't reduce the distance very much.
