Not mentioned in the article is that the AWU has aligned with the Communication Workers of America (CWA). Since CA is an "at-will" state, it's unlikely that there will be any additional job security or bargaining power gained by contributing 1% of each paycheck. I suspect that this misguided effort will shortly dissipate into nothingness with nothing gained.

Dan - CA may be an "at-will" state, but that doesn't mean employers can fire at-will for any reason. For example, employers cannot fire employees for pregnancy, refusal to engage in illegal activity, or whistleblowing. As far as union activity, there are several laws protecting employees, not the least of which is the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Granted, organizing a union is a difficult process, and Google employees will get pushback, but it is not impossible for employees to get what they want, if they stick together.
