As California's drought deepens, water use drops only 1.8%

Original post made on Sep 23, 2021

Next year's cuts in water supply could go even deeper as severe drought grips nearly 90% of California. Residents of the North Coast and Bay Area conserved more than Southern Californians did.

Sorry folks. Conservation is only one part of the drought answer. In California, the approval and licensing process for a desalination plan can take up to twenty years. It took that long for City of Carlsbad to get their plan going and City of Huntington Beach is at final approval stage.

Why does it take so long? There are six state agencies to deal with, multiple permits and the California Environmental Quality Act sets a low bar for lawsuits.

California voters do not like growth. They elect legislators who do not like growth. The result is a lack of water, a lack of housing, a huge bureaucracy and most of all, a lack of common sense.

Another dry winter and you might want to start rethinking how things are done in our State of California.

Agriculture consumes 80% of CA water use but contributes 2% to CA GDP. Time to price water for agriculture appropriately.
