I’m sure that all the staff involved feel terrible about this. That said, it was a mistake for the City of Palo Alto to turn the running of the Animal Shelter over to a nonprofit, instead of continuing on with the experienced staff that they had. I have been to the shelter recently, and the conditions (cleanliness, staff professionalism) are not up to par to what I had seen before pets in need took over from City staff. We can’t go back, but maybe one of the retired managers could be hired to assess conditions?

This is alarming news, to say the least! I encourage Embarcadero Media to continue covering this active story as long as there's more to be done and answered for.

So the puppies were sick at the other shelter. The other shelter puts dogs down when there are too many. If they had left the puppies they would have been put down. So shame on them for trying to save the puppies in the first place?
