The retired Sheriff could have saved all us taxpayers some dollars (less than a million, more than a hundred thousand?) by taking the prosecutor's offer to resign mid-year and save all the court and lawyers expenses. Not the way of Sheriff Smith, it's not her money right?

Sadly the Sheriff's office is rotten from the head down. One of the candidates has a long association with the department. Can we realistically expect him to clean house? And what does years of this public scandal say about those members of the department who stayed? How can you swear to uphold the law and go to work everyday in a department which everyone knows is corrupt? It's not like it was the only gig in law enforcement: SJPD continually bemoans the lack of qualified candidates, so the Sheriff's deputies should have been able to find other work in their chosen profession, if they were so inclined (Maybe the stench was so bad no other department would hire them?). Anyway next time you're on jury duty and one these people testifies, consider the source!
