This is a great article and people like Emily Chen and Carol Olson are truly an inspiration. The community needs them and programs like Mentor Tutor Connection more than ever, especially when considering a deeply disturbing recent statistic - the quadrupling of the teen suicide rate over the last decade. In examining this trend, excessive smart phone usage and social media consumption appear to be exacerbating it and Tech Valley companies should consider the issue as a key focal point in their ESG initiatives. While parents are on the front-line defense and should strive to curb excessive behavior in their children, whether that be sugar or social media consumption, we need more help. Google and Apple should not only promote awareness but design a screenless phone/device that provides teens and others a tool for periodic digital detachment. We have to be more intentional with our use of such great technology.
