Hardly anyone owns a hydrogen car. California may pay up to $300 million for fuel stations anyway

Original post made on Aug 19, 2023

As California steers away from the internal combustion engine, the rapid transition is fueling a fight in the Capitol over how large a role hydrogen fuel cells will play in powering the clean cars of the future.

Signs are pretty clear that hydrogen has already achieved Betamax status in the vehicle power source competition. Probably way cheaper (and cleaner) to offer discounts to move to VHS/EV.

I agree with @SRB. The state doesn't need to invest in any infrastructure. If the idea is valid for the market, there will be hydrogen stations. The state needs to stop trying to pick winners and losers. Open the markets and let them decide.

I'm a 10 year EV (electric vehicle) owner and my next car will likely be EV, too, but our family still owns an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle for the main purpose of longer distance trips. Nearly all the other EV owners I know are the same way - avoiding the long charge times by driving ICE for trips. If there were and EV with hydrogen fuel cell to allow rapid refueling for trips (and sufficient fueling stations) then I think we could skip the ICE. I think it would help sell those hesitant to go EV make the change, too, like Hybrids do.
But, hydrogen production needs to be cleaned up because too much is coming from fossil fuels, so it is not a clean fuel yet.
So, to review, we need 3 things: hydrogen hybrid cars, more hydrogen fuel stations, clean hydrogen. This trifecta will allow us to move away from the ICE and fossil fuels.
