As it does every year around the holidays, the Mountain View Police Department is looking for new, unwrapped toys and clothing, as well as gift cards and cash, for its “Cops that Care” program.
Now in its seventh year, Cops that Care aims to provide holiday gifts to children whose families may not have the means to purchase gifts on their own. This year, police expect that 1,700 local children through age 18 will visit the “North Pole” — i.e. the Police Department — on Saturday, Dec. 19 to select a toy or gift item from among the donations.
Donations before that time can be brought directly to the Police Department at 1000 Villa St. Checks should be made out to the Mountain View Police Activities League (MVPAL), with “Cops that Care” indicated in the comment section.
Last year, police had to make a last-minute push to receive enough toys from the community, so the sooner donations are made, the better.
The actual event will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parents must provide some type of proof to verify their child’s affiliation with Mountain View, such as a driver’s license with a Mountain View address, a school report card or student ID card.

So the citizens of Mountain View do all the work by providing the toys and the ‘Cops that Care’ take all the credit?
Toys for Tots, Second Harvest Food Bank, MDA, St. Jude’s, American Cancer Society, Jimmy V Foundation, etc. – people do all the work and these organizations take all the credit? They all provide services (some greater, some smaller) based largely, if not entirely, on donations.
Where did it even imply the cops take all the credit? The article mentions donations 3 times as well as “…toys from the community”.
It must be tough being a cop in a small town dealing with a bunch of bored malcontents.
I have first hand knowledge of the “Cops That Care” program… the giving of gifts is reliant on the community helping out… The amount of volunteer hours that go into the event: planning, organization, set-up, as well as the day of event is incredible… those volunteers are not seeking “credit”.. They have a true desire to provide joy for young children at Christmas time that otherwise may go without… Newton, I’m sure they would welcome any hours you might donate to help them… Maybe you would then see the true motivation behind the program.
I don’t really care about who is getting credit for what but I wouldn’t be shocked if something shady is going on. I lost all respect for MVPD when I saw two female officers on duty and in uniform trying to pick up on some gang bangers they were detaining. They didn’t know I could hear them and I was disgusted. Besides that, anytime something major happens in our city the response from the PD is always “oh, that happens a couple times a year” like since it has not went over some threshold it doesn’t need to be dealt with. Women assualted at the Shoreline movie theaters? Oh, it happens a couple times a year. Woman attacked on the Stevens Creek Trail? Oh it happens a couple times a year. In my business when something bad happens we try to learn from our mistakes and never let it happen again. But at least they were able to set up a 3 month sting operation to catch that old lady who stole a can of soup from Walgreen’s. Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason the cops are not around for the next major crime is because they are sorting through all the donated toys and taking the best ones home for themselves.
Come on people, this article is about helping during the holidays and spreading awareness about Cops that Care- a chance for young children to have a more special holiday; not about bashing the MVPD. So- CW, why dont you take your critizism somewhere else because no one wants to hear about how you think they can do a better job. They’re always looking for new hires, so you should submit an application if you think you can do a better job.

Check the facts. For the past 5 years MVPD has been ranked dead last in the US in every single statistical category for measuring law enforcement agencies. Look it up.
Poor kids shouldn’t be getting toys on Christmas anyway, their parents should have worked harder.
And by the way, I did subit an application for the MVPD but they rejected me for being too AWESOME! Oh burn!!! In your face!
CW to your comment how stupid could you be. First off the person who wrote back to you never said any racial comments. Look up the def. of racist. If MV is dead last there are a things in the department that over shadow it. Look at our damn community some of the people here work extra hard but still don’t have the money to get the children what they want. For instance my parents are putting me through college and can not get my youngest sister what she would like for christmas.
AND..the whole point is to give thats what the program is about and a chance for the CHILDREN to choose what the kids would like versus their parents influencng what they should get. I’ve volunteered there for 3 years so yea you know what maybe you should go to college.again. and then place judgment or volunteer for the mvpd… until then think before you speak and gain some knowledge
