Retiring Community Services director Dave Muela was teary-eyed when he received a proclamation for his 20 years of service the city.
“You guys are awesome,” he said with tears in his eyes as he thanked his staff for their hard work.
Commissioners and city staff at the Jan. 10 City Council meeting held up pictures of Muela when he first started with the city and had a full head of hair. He is the now the “old guy” around city hall, Kasperzak said.
“Dave has just been a great person to work with all these years,” said Mayor Mike Kapserzak. “Half of the council served on the parks and recreation commission with Dave and he gave us all really great training.”
Since leaving Milpitas in 1991, Muela has overseen the city’s large community services department, including parks, recreation, forestry, landscaping, performing arts, Shoreline Park and its golf course. The city opened numerous parks during his time as director and laid over 4 miles of the Steven’s Creek Trail.
“At my level you don’t really do much except make work for other people,” Muela said. “If this community has anything to be proud of, it’s the hard working staff. I’d like to think we’ve improved the overall quality of this community just a little bit.”
I had the pleasure of working with Dave on a community health-related event over the summer. Dave “gets it” that what our city can provide via our Parks & Rec. department directly impacts community health. I wish him well, and know that his stewardship of that department will result in continued emphasis on physical and mental health (and fun!)
Dave was truly one of the BEST Director of our Great City. As a commissioner for 9 years, it was a pleasue being part of his world.
The City Council meeting and his retirement party were heartwarming.

Class A jerk…..errogant…full of himself…thank god hes gone… Or is he?? Will end up being a double dipper im sure..
Age at retirement? Number of years of service? Salary? Did he train up his replacement? Will he be hired back to double dip because he’s so valuable?
Oh that’s right, the public has no right to know any of the details of a civil servant choosing to retire. Otherwise, who cares if the guy is retiring.
All the rats are jumping ship, locking in their fat pensions before the public demands they be changed.
My dictionary does not contain the word “errogant.” Please define. Better yet, learn to spell and express yourself effectively before impugning the character of others.
