A march down Castro Street is planned for Thursday evening in support of “commonsense measures to prevent gun violence.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the downtown Caltrain Station on Evelyn Avenue. The event is hosted by Josh Wolf, who recently asked Mayor John Inks to join a large coalition called “Mayors Against Illegal Guns.” Inks refused.

“We want to make sure that Mountain View residents know about Mayor Inks’ refusal to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” Wolf said in an email.

An event page at my.barackobama.com says “We will hold elected officials accountable for not taking action to prevent gun violence. Will you join us?”

The event ends in front of City Hall at 7 p.m.

Wolf’s guest opinion on the topic can be read here.

  1. Exactly what are we marching for here?

Are we “against” illegal guns? What does that even mean?

If something is already illegal, what more do you want done? Do you want to make it double-illegal? If that’s even possible.

My guess is you want to ban all guns. That’s definitely what Mayors Against Illegal Guns wants to do. Civil rights be damned! No one needs a gun in this country!

  2. They should be marching against illegal aliens, since that’s actually a law that’s not being enforced (and leading to significant crime). At least existing laws on illegal guns are very heavily enforced.

  3. I’d march for a permanent head to the ATF and full funding of the dept so it can do its job. Having laws an no agency to enforce them only works if you do not want any gun laws. The NRA has fought against even the funding of the NRA. They say “We have plenty of gun laws” and I tend to agree. Now its time to enforce them.

This march shines a light on the way some gun fondlers have made it so even the current laws are unenforceable, by stripping away the ability of the NRA to do their job.

  4. People leading with their emotions have no common sense, like this Josh Wolf guy.

Just the tile, “March against illegal guns” is an Oxymoron statement, but probably just like Josh.

Just another way to try and take away one of our constitutional rights.

  5. Lets just fund up the NRA to enforce the laws on the books. Anyone who is against the US enforcing the laws of its land? Remember, you don’t get to cherry pick the ones you don’t like.

  6. You are marching to ban guns. I’m out
Good for the Mayor to do what leaders do and not be a follower.
He will have my vote for not being a follower. Or if I do, will my family march against me for doing so.
Come on people, sheep. Whom ever.
    Wake up

  7. The mayor wisely chose not to join MAIG since all mayors are already against illegal activity (of course that can be debated in regards to immigration). He was, in no way, promoting inaction against gun violence. MAIG should be renamed MAAG (Mayors Against All Guns) if they are to be honest. Many mayors have actually dropped out once they saw Bloomberg’s agenda specifically targets all legal firearms as well.

If you support this march, you are either ignorant/fearful (hoplophobia) or you support/perpetuate ignorance and fear.

If you are at all willing, try to have a thoughtful and open discussion with a law-abiding gunowner and you will see that guns are the tool, not the cause, and that those of us who enjoy the sport are in no way related to the people who are committing the atrocious crimes that are grabbing headlines.

  8. This is ridiculous! It is already illegal! Why don’t you do something productive with your time an help feed the needy at Hopes Corner, volunteer at school.. maybe we can also march for people who speed. Let pull together and make Mountain View a place for people to be proud of!

  9. Look at all the people who think this is a march to make something illegal. Now you can see why so many are confused by the issue…lack of conceptual grasp.

  10. In our country you can be killed and the killer get away with it if you are carrying a baseball bat on the way to a little league game or wearing a hoodie at night. The second amendment is not a right to shoot or kill anyone and at anytime you want. Your rights end where my chin begins!

If you want to shoot someone, join the Army and get off our streets!

  11. How about these morons march in those neighborhoods with high crime rates like Oakland,Richmond, East Palo Alto, and other cities /town in the country? bunch of cowards walking around a safe downtown area so that they can sip on expensive lattes in Starbucks , drink some exotic cocktails in the bars or eat some expensive food in not so great restaurants in the downtown area,..

  12. Wow. You guys are so goofy. If you actually read what MAIG is doing, you will understand that they are primarily trying to keep guns out of the hands of felons:

    — “New Investigation by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Shows Thousands of Individuals with Criminal Records are Seeking to Illegally Buy Guns Through Online Sales”

    — “Hundreds of Americans Rally in Washington, DC to Launch Next Phase in National Fight to Fix Gun Background Check System”

    — “New Polls in More Than 40 Districts and 20 States Show Voters Overwhelmingly Support Background Checks for All Gun Sales”

and on and on… Ban all guns?

So, yeah..it’s about enforcing existing laws.

Maybe that’s why it is called MAIG: Mayors Against ILLEGAL Guns, as opposed to MAG: Mayors Against Guns.

Just curious, out of all the ‘gun advocates’ and ‘i hate illegals’ forum posters, how many of you were able to earn a high school diploma? Or even a G.E.D.? Embarrassing….

  13. Greg, you said “…funny thing is, sure, maybe their are thousands of criminals ->trying<- to buy guns online, but NONE, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH, succeed at this. Federal laws specifically require all firearms be shipped to to a federally licensed firearms dealer, where the purchaser undergoes a background check. ”

Um…Just because there is a law on the books that makes something illegal, it doesn’t mean that it is sufficient to enforce. For example, there are privacy issues with medical records that can make doing a background check for mental instability difficult. As I’m sure you are aware, there are a bazillion laws on the books that don’t always co-ordinate to help get a job done. As it stands, there are so many loopholes in background checks and gun transfers, that even if something is technically ‘illegal’ at some level, there is not sufficient regulatory powers to enforce.

While there are some organizations that want to ban all guns, or some classes of guns, there are orgs like MAIG that simply want to keep the guns away from folks that lost their ‘constitutional right’ (if you say so) to ‘bear’ them. Of course the NRA is opposed to *any* regulations that might impede their primary sponsors (gun manufacturers) from maximizing their profit potential by selling to *everybody*.

“As for your snarky remarks regarding gun advocates and illegal alien opposers, do you truly believe that a higher education is prerequisite to constitutional rights?”

Greg– Do you really think that a high school diploma is considered ‘higher education’???? Wow. This country is in worse shape than I thought! 🙂
And no, of course you don’t need to be able to read, write or do arithmetic to enjoy your constitutional rights. I’m just doing a quick survey to see if a certain suspicion I have is correct…

  14. “These gun owners are just like cyclists. They don’t want any laws to be enforced. One and the same.”

Absolutely not. Gun owner want existing laws enforced. What they do not want is the ridiculous new laws be floated in Washington.

  15. Glad to see that most people (with the expected exception of Mr. Sosnow and “Moreregulation”) think this is as silly as it clearly is. I am proud of Mayor Inks for his refusal to join a group that is willing to strip everyone’s rights rather than enforce already existing laws. It is far more courageous to stand by your principles than to go along with the crowd.

  16. “New Investigation by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Shows Thousands of Individuals with Criminal Records are Seeking to Illegally Buy Guns Through Online Sales”

    That’s hilarious.

Instead of getting all your news from HuffPo and the Daily Show, try going to a gun show. Walk around and talk to people. You will see that they are just regular people. They are not the trailer trash rednecks that the media makes them out to be. And, you won’t see any droopy-pants gang members or other felon wandering around.

  17. Speaking of nuts jobs, whatever happened to Idea Farm? Did he ditch his van and change his name to Josh Wolf or is he just wandering around out there?

  18. USA: “Instead of getting all your news from HuffPo and the Daily Show, try going to a gun show. Walk around and talk to people. You will see that they are just regular people.”

Regular People? Like Timothy McVeigh. Just a regular Joe.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh#1993_Waco_siege_and_gun_shows

USA: “And, you won’t see any droopy-pants gang members or other felon wandering around.”

Decoding USA’s “droopy-pants gang member” –> black person. What a surprise.

  19. Mayors Against Illegal Guns is in favor of the following:

A gun registry at the national level. The want us to have to register every firearm we own. MAIG says this would help law enforcement solve gun related crimes. If you have followed gun laws in this country you would know that the United States had a national firearms database from 1968 to 1986. You would also know that in 1986 the FBI told congress we should stop wasting money on the database since it helped solved ZERO crimes in 18 years. Canada just wasted $2 Billion to come to the same conclusion a few years ago.

The only thing registration of firearms leads to in confiscation.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns also wants to make it so anyone on the government’s “Terrorist Watch List” is prohibited from possessing firearms. This sounds perfectly sane on its surface but you have to realize there is NO DUE PROCESS for getting on this list, finding out if you’re on it, or getting yourself removed from it. I think we should all have a problem with losing a civil right based on mere (not reasonable) suspicion this country.

Those are just two examples I have a problem with. I also have a problem with anything led by Michael Bloomberg. If he were in charged he’d ban all guns. Hell he’s trying to tell people what to eat and drink as it is. Anyone in favor of that kind of government isn’t going to get my support for anything.

  20. A “March Against Gun Violence” would seem like a perfectly reasonable march to have, and would get broad support, I would think.

But MAIG seems to me like a deceptive and untrustworthy group, as it is currently constituted.

  21. BTW, Josh Wolf is also the guy that lead “Occupy Mountain View”. After suffering relentless hours of “occupy Mountain View” screamed over a bullhorn at Castro and ECR, I think he had about five people show up to “occupy” city hall plaza…

With Bloomberg’s support and bevy of lies, he might garner a few more for this silly march.

I just don’t understand how he does not get the fact that this is not the role of our Mayor to use his title to support an organization that is clearly intends to undermine the constitution of the United States.

  22. @moreregulation At least one is not a coward when they identify themselves to support their views as opposed to hiding behind a moniker.

You take a snippet from MAIG’s site:
    — “New Investigation by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Shows Thousands of Individuals with Criminal Records are Seeking to Illegally Buy Guns Through Online Sales”

funny thing is, sure, maybe their are thousands of criminals ->trying<- to buy guns online, but NONE, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH, succeed at this. Federal laws specifically require all firearms be shipped to to a federally licensed firearms dealer, where the purchaser undergoes a background check. IN ALL FIFTY STATES. There is no “illegal internet gun market” as Bloomberg would have you believe. He twists words and fabricates scenarios to fool people into believing his lies.

As for your snarky remarks regarding gun advocates and illegal alien opposers, do you truly believe that a higher education is prerequisite to constitutional rights? I’m guessing you do, because it is right on par with the rest of the elite like Bloomberg, who will not be satisfied until the entire populace is disarmed and unable to defend their rights as citizens.

  23. This is exactly the type of thing that I expected. Like most extremist special interest groups, they don’t take “NO” for an answer. When will these people understand that “No means No!”? This is exactly why I spoke out against this group at city hall after one of their members used ambush tactics to try to pressure the mayor to join. I don’t care what group you belong to, you don’t just come to a council meeting and demand that the Mayor or a member of Council sign something without having talked to them about it first.

In a truly democratic society, people are free to make their own choices. People should be free from being harassed just because they disagree with someone else’s point of view. In my opinion, this march is nothing more than a group of outside agitators trying to harass and intimidate the Mayor into joining a special interest group whose goals are unclear at best.

This group is headed by Mayor Bloomberg of New York. The same Mayor that doesn’t trust the residents of his city with table salt or Big Gulps. Everyone is against illegal guns so the premise of the group itself is ludicrous. I believe the ultimate goal is to take ALL guns from law abiding citizens so that in the end, only criminals will be armed.

The Second Amendment guarantees the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms, it says nothing about government control or special interest groups that know what’s best for everyone else.

  24. Latest reports indicate about 30 participants. Definitely represents a majority of Mountain View residents.

Perhaps Mayor inks should capitulate? NOT!

  25. My wife and I were just there counter-protesting and we counted about 20 that came to City Hall. I don’t know how many there were at the Caltrain Station.

  26. Let’s see:

I graduated from the ORIGINAL MVHS back in 1973. I helped create the X-MP and Y-MP supercomputers. I also have a better claim to ” Inventing the Internet ” than Al Gore has..

The only ILLEGAL situation that deserves a march is dealing with the ILLEGAL ALIEN MAGNET that Mountain View has become. The MVPD has been explicitly told to ” look the other way ” as this FEDERAL CRIME happens daily in Mountain View.

Checking for LEGAL RIGHT TO WORK STATUS in ” job shops “is a common thing across the country. The same applies to forms of ” government assistance ” of any type.

The County is known as ” Santa Claus County ” in areas which have a high concentration of ILLEGAL ALIENS. That means ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS, not just the ones in the news…

About the ILLEGAL GUN ISSUE: The Sullivan act took care of the ” Chicago Typewriter ” problem of the days of Al Capone. Drum magazines were loaded with 50 cartridges and that was pretty excessive for urban use..

Now some people want to claim violating our SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS by pushing ILLEGAL GUN LEGISLATION instead of PUNISHING THE ILLEGAL USE AND USERS OF GUNS.

Like knives, machetes, hatchets and even baseball bats, GUNS ARE JUST TOOLS!!

The people who think that guns are the problem are the ignorant and stupid ones, because they cannot understand the end argument that the TOOLS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM,THE PEOPLE THAT USE THE TOOL IMPROPERLY ARE THE PROBLEM!

Colorado allows OPEN CARRY. They also have the Castle Doctrine ( erroneously called the ” Make My Day ” Law ).

In rural and other Colorado Cities, burglars and other people who use tools improperly make the news…as EX burglars and felons.

The one shining example of typical CALIFORNIA behavior is the Denver area. THEY have the GUN GRABBER LAWS and your “improper tool user ” has a field day among the sheeple, with MANY lawbreakers roaming the streets.

BTW, the AURORA Theater Killings happened BECAUSE THEATER PATRONS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO BE ARMED! That is the subject of MANY lawsuits that M$M refuse to talk about even now!

    I ask: ” Why are so many so-called ” intellectuals ” SO STUPID??? ”

    P.S. I OPEN CARRY
