A two-alarm house fire broke out on the Elmwood Street in Mountain View on Tuesday night, leaving one injured and causing significant damage to the home.
Mountain View emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a fire at the single-family residence at the 200 block of Elmwood Street around 7:20 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke in the area and flames coming from the home, according to a press release from the Mountain View Fire Department.
Three people were in the home when the fire broke out, and were able to escape the building prior to fire crews’ arrival, according to fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett.
While firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, they treated one of the residents for smoke inhalation. The resident was transferred to a local hospital with minor injuries. Fire crews remained on scene through the night to protect the scene and extinguish hotspots. A fire investigator was sent to determine the cause of the fire, and remained on the scene Wednesday morning.
Though the fire did not spread to neighboring homes, the fire caused significant damage to the residence. Garrett said there is no damage estimate as of yet, but the residence is currently “unlivable.”
The damaged home’s residents have been displaced, and are being provided with temporary housing and necessities by American Red Cross.
The Mountain View Fire Department received assistance from the Mountain View Police Department, NASA Ames Moffett Field Fire Department, Palo Alto Fire Department, and the Santa Clara County Fire Associates.
Yes, a smoky smell was prominent in downtown Mountain View near Castro and Evelyn by 7:30 PM, with a low haze visible on streets to the northeast and a sulfur odor as from matches or fireworks. Many people were strolling or dining outdoors downtown in the summer evening, and commenting about the smoke.
