School Lunch Debt

Original post made by HAB, Willowgate, on May 10, 2019

It all started with seeing an article about Valerie Castile, Philando Castile's mom, paying $8K in school lunch debt so that seniors could walk at their graduation in her Minnesota community. I wondered, how much school lunch debt does our school district have?

The answer is forthcoming as I have emails out to both MVWSD and MVLAUSD. In asking the principal at our children's school, we found out it is in the thousands of dollars. School lunch debt is for a variety of reasons; maybe a family qualifies for reduced lunch rates but makes too much for free lunch and is struggling in this high rent community. Or, a family doesn't qualify for any assistance and is trying to survive in Silicon Valley because it is their community.

What are we, as community members to do about this? Contact the principal of your child's school and ask how much that debt is and how you can pay it. What to do if you don't have a kid in the school system? Contact the district and find out how to pay down that debt. Let's support families in our community.

Why don't we just raise taxes to fund free, hot breakfast and lunch for the students in our schools? Good schools make for high property values, so if we didn't have Prop 13, we'd be able to adequately fund these measures with the unearned value accumulated to landowners.

MV needs to build more houses instead of apartments. With school taxes per parcel (that is where school districts get the additional money) it would improve the school district budget.

Yes, but build the houses in the LASD area around San Antonio Center. Their parcel tax is $900 a year, but
MVWSD's parcel tax is a 10th of that. So build houses instead of the new apartment buildings there. That will fix things right up.
