Up to 36,000 gallons of raw sewage may have spilled onto Highway 101 after a sanitation truck crashed and overturned on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened just after 12:30 p.m. near the San Antonio Road off-ramp. According to preliminary CHP reports, the truck was traveling northbound when a black sedan cut off it off in an attempt to take the off-ramp. The truck driver then veered right, hit crash attenuators on the shoulder and lost control of the vehicle.

The truck then traveled across all lanes and struck a white sedan before hitting the center median wall and overturning. The truck landed mostly in the southbound lanes, according to the CHP. No injuries have been reported.

The crash impact ruptured the truck’s sewage tank, and CHP officers say they were treating the incident as a hazmat situation.

At 3:30 p.m., the CHP reported that all northbound lanes had reopened. A little after 5 p.m. all lanes were reported open.

  1. Most gross.

I’ve noticed signs on Hwy 101 saying that a construction zone speed limit of 55mph is being actively enforced. Is this collision within the enforcement zone? Some drivers obey the signs and others ignore it, driving at 70mph or more. The speed difference between the legal drivers and the scofflaws creates some very dangerous situations, especially mid-day when speeds on the freeway are higher.

  2. Whoever the person is in the sedan that cut off the truck is should have their license revoked and be put in jail. People need to stop being selfish when driving and drive safer, especially in this ever growing congested area. Ifyou’re going to miss your exit, instead of dangerously cutting through traffic to get to it, maybe take the safe route and go to the next exit and then turn around. Sure, it adds a bit of time, but would you rather add a few minutes to your drive or end up in an accident? The person that caused this is an idiot and should never be allowed near a car again.

  3. I saw this truck sliding across the freeway and thought for sure it was going to jump the divider into my car. I am so happy to hear no injuries because when I got to my doctors office my blood pressure was off the charts. Very upsetting to see. On the way home I also saw a crane trying to get the truck off the center divider. People slow down, if your day dreaming or texting and miss your turn off take the next one please and get the F off your phone.

  4. Agree 100% with @John post, especially this

“If you’re going to miss your exit, instead of dangerously cutting through traffic to get to it, maybe take the safe route and go to the next exit and then turn around. Sure, it adds a bit of time, but would you rather add a few minutes to your drive or end up in an accident? “

Yes, this needs to be emphasized, repeated and ingrained in every driver. I see this extremely risky maneuver all the time. So dangerous, so selfish. Terrible driving skills.

  5. I drive up and down Castro street each day. Without fail someone turns right from the left turn lane, or vice versa. Uber and
Left drivers stop in the middle of the single lane blocking it. I’ve seen a car with no one in it blocking the single lane. And it is illegal to make a U turn in a business district, yet it happens every time I drive Castro street. The traffic police could make a ton of money in four short blocks!

  6. I’m forwarding this to my newly driving grand kids just to emphasize the importance of driving safely and responsibly. There’s nothing like a graphic description and photo to make an impression.

  7. When my husband’s auto insurance shot way up this year, he called Our agent to find out why, and they said this area is experiencing many more accidents than in the past. It sure feels less afe out there.

  8. How about you F*cking idiots stop driving so slowly on the left lane??? The left lane is meant to be a passing lane and yet, I still deal with slow dumb@SSes on the left lane. Seriously, if you’re a slow molasses, stay on the right side or second to right on the highways. Idiots here say slow driving is more safe, when it’s not! I’ve seen retards drive 50mphs on freeways, when you already obstruct the flow of traffic!

  9. By California law, there is no such thing as being “cut off”. All drivers must follow at a safe distance. If the truck was not following at a safe distance and could not safely come to a stop then the truck was 100% at fault, case closed.

  10. Being “cut off” means that someone abruptly entered your lane in front of you. Are you supposed to make sure that there’s sufficient space between you and cars in other lanes? How can you ever pass anyone?

I was on the other side after the accident as the fire truck was arriving and got off at San Antonio to the frontage road.

“Whoever the person is in the sedan that cut off the truck is should have their license revoked and be put in jail.”

Depends on exactly what they did and what the prosecutor can prove.

“People need to stop being selfish when driving and drive safer, especially in this ever growing congested area.”

    Indeed, as I always say:
“Courtesy is free to the one who gives it and priceless to the one who receives it.”

I should print up some bumper-stickers!

“If you’re going to miss your exit, instead of dangerously cutting through traffic to get to it, maybe take the safe route and go to the next exit and then turn around.”

It seems pretty strange to have the truck veer to the right and strike the crash attenuators at the end of the exit lane if the car was trying to exit there. How did the car driver think they were going to make it to the exit lane if it was all so close that the truck driver couldn’t avoid the barriers?

It would be really interesting if the truck or someone else had a video of the event.

“The person that caused this is an idiot and should never be allowed near a car again.”

You could say that about at least 50% of the drivers in California.

When I was 14 I could have gotten a learners permit and a full unrestricted license by 16.
