To Sue Dremann, How can you have been a reporter for over 20 years and still not understand what is incorrect with your statement below?
"overturn the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, which had granted a woman's right to an abortion"
Perhaps you should read the US Constitution and all the Amendments.
Start with the 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th Amendments.
Not one right has ever been "granted" by the Constitution or by Congress or any other law-making body to We the People. Government cannot grant rights and cannot take them away.
Rights always belong to We the People already. Acts of government can only do 2 things:
Government can protect a pre-existing right OR government can violate a pre-existing right.
In no case can an act of law create any right, nor destroy, nor grant, nor give, nor take away any right to/from any person.
Acts of government may ONLY create and grant PRIVILEGES to people, like the governmental recognition of marriage for example. However, under the US Constitution government may NOT create a privilege without extending it equally to other citizens. That whole "equal rights and privileges" thing.
It's long past time for reporters to get around to reading more of the US Constitution that just one small piece of the First Amendment.
A reporter should also know and value the fact that proper use of words is critical to truth and journalism.
