Hollywood actor John Heard, 71, best known as the dad from “Home Alone,” died in a Palo Alto hotel room on Friday afternoon, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Heard was reportedly staying at the hotel to recover from back surgery that he had undergone at Stanford Medical Center two days earlier, according to a report from celebrity news website TMZ.
A maid discovered the actor in his hotel room and called police, who pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the report.
The name of the hotel has not been disclosed, but Palo Alto police responded to a medical emergency call at 2:11 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel at 625 El Camino Real, according to emergency dispatch.
The medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy on Heard Saturday morning and is investigating the cause of death. Toxicology test results are expected to become available in the next three to four weeks, county officials said.
There were no signs of foul play in Heard’s death, according the medical examiner’s office.

Either the surgery was minor, or Stanford hospital kind of rushed him out of there. I had back surgery at UCSF and the doctor kept me at the hospital 2 days to monitor my recovery and make sure no complications.
I had a a back surgery, that Stanford they called minor, and they kept me for a couple of days and then pushed me out . After that I was in a skilled nursing center for 2 weeks. This was followed by many weeks of therapy. Obviously he was dismissed to soon.
I am sad to hear. So many things come up for me. I understand the rush out of the Hospital could be a cause…..But what about the Drugs that came with it? Maybe it was an accident, but he took too many? Possibility?

Very sad news. No doubt there is more to this than we know and the rest is just speculation on our part. Curious that he was found alone in a hotel room across from Stanford instead of staying in a skilled nursing center, since as others have mentioned that recovery needs time and proper care.
RIP John Heard. I always appreciated his acting.
