A section of Castro Street will undergo major renovations starting next week, with pavement resurfacing and the construction of a new central walkway as part of a larger effort to upgrade downtown’s pedestrian mall.
Work will begin Nov. 6 and is expected to last three weeks, covering the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Castro Street between California Street and West Evelyn Avenue, according to a city update.
Sidewalks and businesses will remain open, although outdoor dining and activities will be closed until the renovations are finished, the city said.
Other street and sidewalk upgrades to the pedestrian mall at this time include intersection striping, sidewalk and parklet power washing, a cleanup of city furnishings and storm-drain clearing, the city said.
After the work is complete, the city plans to install new patio barriers. It also is expecting business owners to acquire new outdoor patio license agreements, which goes into effect Nov. 1, according to the city website.
Future improvements to the pedestrian mall, anticipated for 2024 and in upcoming years, include decorative street pavement treatments for the central walkway, wayfinding signage and improvements on Castro Street and the Villa Street and Dana Street intersections.
More information about the city’s plans for the pedestrian mall is available online.
