An oven fire in Mountain View closed a small portion of Lathan Street for an hour on Tuesday, April 9, but did not result in any injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.

Emergency responders received a 9-1-1 call at 10:56 a.m. reporting an oven fire in a multifamily home that was operating a daycare in the 1900 block of W. El Camino Real, according to a city of Mountain View press release. That portion of El Camino lies just north of the intersection with El Monte Avenue.

When firefighters arrived at 11:01 a.m., the occupants had already evacuated. Smoke was coming from the first floor of a three story multifamily residence, the release said.

Firefighters put out flames coming from the bottom of an oven using a fire extinguisher. To make sure the fire was fully put out, they also used thermal imaging cameras to measure heat behind the kitchen’s drywall, according to the release.

The occupants were subsequently allowed to return to the daycare.

The Mountain View Police Department closed off the portion of Latham Street immediately behind the property while firefighters were on the scene, according to the fire department.

The fire led to roughly $2,000 in damage and was determined to have been accidentally caused by “storing flammable material in the broiler,” the press release said.

The fire department noted that cooking fires are the top cause of house fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Safety tips include keeping anything that can catch fire (such as oven mitts, wooden utensils and towels) away from the stove top, as well as smothering flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. If in doubt about extinguishing a fire, get out and call 9-1-1, the fire department advises.

  1. Wow, this is the French-American Academie daycare… My baby used to go there, but the Director terminated his care with no notice and said it was closing down. Glad everyone was ok (and that we found a better daycare!)
