Mountain View Whisman gives staff $1K bonuses

The Mountain View Whisman School District is giving its teachers and other employees a $1,000 bonus, which the school board approved last week.

The board voted unanimously at a Jan. 30 meeting to sign off on the $1,000 payments. The intention of the one-time bonus, district officials said, is to help employees to save for the future or pay down debt. Changes to the state’s public public employee retirement system means that newer staff will receive reduced benefits, Interim Superintendent Kevin Skelly told board members.

“A thousand dollars is not that much, but (it’s) sort of a message of appreciation mid-year,” Skelly said. “This is a reflection of the board’s commitment to treating its employees well.”

Skelly finished his time as interim superintendent last week, with Jeff Baier taking over the temporary leadership spot.

The bonuses are expected to cost roughly $700,000, according to the district. Staff who aren’t full-time employees will receive a pro-rated payment.

According to Skelly, the district’s top administrators won’t receive the bonus, because they have individual contracts that haven’t been changed to reflect this payment.
