El Camino Health has officially started construction on a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Sunnyvale, part of its ongoing expansion across the Bay Area.
The 52-bed facility, located near Mountain View border on El Camino Real, is expected to open in spring 2027, serving patients recovering from strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries and other serious conditions. Specialized services will include physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as programs focused on neurological, amputation, and orthopedic rehabilitation.
The projected cost of the hospital is $120 million, according to Ross Coyle, communications spokesperson for the facility.
The four-story hospital will also have a brain injury unit with a private dining area and therapy gym, along with large rehabilitation spaces and a therapeutic courtyard. The design includes a transitional living apartment for patients to practice daily living activities before returning home.
“The need for high-quality, comprehensive inpatient service in Silicon Valley and the South Bay has grown significantly,” Coyle said. “This new facility allows us to expand access to specialized care in a setting built specifically to support healing and recovery.”
El Camino Health CEO Dan Woods said the hospital is intended to provide more than just inpatient care.
“Our goal is to help patients regain independence and return to their daily lives through both clinical treatment and transitional support,” Woods said in a press statement.
The facility will also house ancillary services like radiology, laboratory work, security, and biomedical engineering.
The new rehabilitation center is part of El Camino Health’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the region. The nonprofit health system owns and operates El Camino Hospital in Mountain View and Los Gatos, along with more than 20 outpatient care sites throughout the region.
