Walkway and curb ramp improvements on Castro Street are slated to begin Monday, with the goal of making it easier for people using wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles to get around downtown Mountain View.
Construction is expected to take five to six weeks, according to the city website.
The construction work will impact four blocks of Castro Street from Fairmont Avenue to California Street. The project will upgrade curb ramps and “median pathways” to comply with accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The city also plans to upgrade crosswalks on Castro Street to improve visibility and safety along the corridor.

During the construction period, there will be sidewalk and street closures, with pedestrian and vehicle detours. However, businesses and driveways will remain open. The construction is expected to cause periodic noise, including one-hour intervals of jack hammering, and minor dust and debris near active work areas, according to the city.
The project is funded by Senate Bill 1, state legislation that invests in repair work to improve roadways.
Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. Work outside the scheduled hours will be avoided whenever possible, according to the city.
More information about the project is available on the city website.
