A century-old home near downtown Mountain View caught fire Monday afternoon, with flames spreading quickly before firefighters could put out the blaze.

The fire ultimately caused an estimated $150,000 in damage and displaced three residents, according to a statement from the Mountain View Fire Department, which attributed the fast spread of the flames to the design of the old structure.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 4:35 p.m. on Oct. 6 reporting a fire at a multifamily residence on the 1100 block of California Street. When fire crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the exterior of a two-story house. The fire had spread to the side of the building and into the attic, the fire department said.

The blaze was put out with an interior hose line that prevented the flames from spreading further. Firefighters then cut open the ceiling, walls and roof of the home and used thermal imaging to make sure the fire was fully extinguished, according to the statement.

There were no reported injuries, but three adults were displaced from their homes as a result of the fire. All three managed to find temporary housing, the fire department said.

Officials have determined that the fire was accidentally caused by the “improper disposal of smoking materials” in a recycling bin, the fire department said.
