16th annual Spartan Turkey Trot returns to Mountain View High

For the past 15 years, the Mountain View High School Sports Boosters has hosted a Spartan Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, and this year is no exception.

The annual tradition is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 27, with a 5K run, 5K walk, Spartan Mile and kids races on the docket.

Advance registration is $50 for adults and $35 for those 18 and under. The online registration platform adds additional fees during sign-up. If spots are still available, race-day registration will cost $65 for all age groups. The children’s fun runs are free, but participants can opt to buy a T-shirt.

Proceeds from the event support the high school’s athletic department, as well as campus teams and clubs. Pets are not allowed.

Mountain View helps children send letters to Santa

Mountain View is bringing back its “Letters to Santa” program this year, where kids can write a note to Santa Claus and receive one in return.

The city invites children to send their letters either by dropping them off in a mailbox in the Mountain View Community Center lobby, 201 S. Rengstorff Ave., or by mailing them to P.O. Box 7540, Mountain View, CA 94039.

Letters that are postmarked before Dec. 1 will receive a personalized response.

Mountain View library offers birdwatching and ukulele kits

Local library card holders now have access to birdwatching backpacks and ukulele kits from the Mountain View Public Library.

Each birdwatching backpack contains two pairs of binoculars, a California bird field guide and an information card, according to a recent city newsletter. The ukulele kits come equipped with the instrument, a tuner and a beginner’s guide.

The gear can be borrowed from the “Library of Things” for up to two weeks at a time. Library cards are free for all California residents. Anyone 13 years or older can fill out an online application to get one.

Located at 585 Franklin St., the library’s typical hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. It will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
