A fire broke out in a Mountain View apartment Sunday evening after flammable objects were placed on top of a hot stove, causing $5,500 in damage but no injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.
Emergency dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call at 9:33 p.m. on Nov. 30 reporting a stove fire in a multi-family residential complex on the 300 block of Escuela Avenue, a Monday press release said. Firefighters arrived on scene five minutes later and used a water fire extinguisher to put out the flames in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment.

With thermal imaging cameras, firefighters measured the heat behind the drywall to ensure that the fire did not spread further in the building. While fire crews and equipment were on scene, the Mountain View Police Department blocked off Escuela Avenue for 45 minutes.
Residents from the affected apartment, who evacuated before firefighters arrived, arranged to stay at a local hotel temporarily because of smoke damage to their unit, the press release said. Firefighters handed over the complex to the building’s management team before leaving the scene.
The press release noted that according to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the most common cause of residential fires and injuries. Tips to prevent these types of incidents include staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping anything that can catch fire away from appliances, the press release said.
