Local residents who died recently include:
Richard Allen Walston, 81, a Palo Alto resident who was born in New Mexico, taught himself to code and worked as a system programmer, analyzed particle accelerator data at the Argonne National Laboratory and later worked for IBM in Silicon Valley. Known for his ability to fix nearly anything, he enjoyed flying, traveling and studying genealogy. He died March 13, 2026.
Richard Allen Runkel, 93, a Palo Alto resident who worked at Syntex, where he was instrumental in developing the medication known today as Aleve. Born in Wisconsin, he served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War and enjoyed roadtripping with his wife and six children. He died on Feb. 8, 2026.
