Bubb student wins recognition in national art contest

A fourth grader from Bubb Elementary School in Mountain View has been selected as a winner of a national art contest.

Out of more than 250 submissions from K-12 students across the country, fourth grader Skye Thomson was one of just 18 winners chosen by a group of judges. The contest, hosted by KidWind – an organization that aims to encourage students to take interest in clean energy sources – had a theme of solar energy this year.

In recognition of this subject, Skye created a colorful image of “free flying butterflies with solar wings that transform the sun’s energy to electricity,” her mom, Tootoo Thomson told the Voice. Skye worked quietly on her project for many hours, starting from scratch three different times, Tootoo Thomson said.

Her piece, along with the artwork of the other winners, will be added to the KidWind Energy Art Challenge website by May 1, according to an email from the organization.

Local nonprofit hosts bottomless ice cream fundraiser

The Community Services Agency is hosting its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Rengstorff Park, 201 S. Rengstorff Ave.

The event first started as a soup dinner but turned into an outdoor ice-cream fest called “Sundaes on Sundays” during the pandemic. The Mountain View-based nonprofit, which provides support services for low-income and elderly local residents, has stuck with this theme for the last four years.

The fundraiser will take place in the park’s barbecue area and will feature all-you-can-eat ice cream from Baskin Robins with bowls from the Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild. There will also be activities for kids.

Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 for seniors and $10 for children. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit csacares.org/events.

Applications open for teen summer volunteer program

Mountain View’s Teen Volunteer Summer Program has started accepting applications for this year.

The program allows those ages 14-17 to apply for three different positions: junior leader, junior lifeguard and Deer Hollow Farm intern. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 24.

Junior leaders for the city’s summer camps are expected to be available for at least one week of service between June 16 and Aug. 1. Their responsibilities include engaging with youth, facilitating activities and shadowing camp staff.

Those hoping to be junior lifeguards this summer need to be available for at least two weeks between June 16 and Aug. 7. Teens in this role are expected to help aquatics staff maintain a safe and fun environment during swim lessons.

Interns for Deer Hollow Farm are required to participate in an overnight training from June 11-12. They then need to be available for at least two weeks between June 15 and July 31.

More information about the summer volunteer program can be found on the application site.
