City manager wins award
City Manager Kimbra McCarthy is being honored with a Good Governance Award from the International City/County Management Association, an organization for professional employees who serve local governments.
McCarthy is the first recipient of the award, which recognizes city managers who have made “outstanding contributions to ethical leadership, transparent decision-making, accountability, and effective governance in local government,” according to a city news release.
Since 2020, McCarthy has served as Mountain View’s manager, reporting directly to the City Council. Before then, McCarthy worked for Redwood City as an assistant city manager. She also had previously served as a deputy city manager for Mountain View.
“Serving as Mountain View’s City Manager remains the pinnacle of my career in public service,” McCarthy said in the press release. “I love our community and am fortunate to work alongside a City Council that embraces civility and good governance.”
Recipients of ICMA professional awards are selected through a competitive review process with an independent panel of ICMA members evaluating the nominations, the press release said.
Midpen oversight committee
The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving a four-year term on the Measure AA Bond Oversight Committee.
In 2014, voters approved a $300 million general obligation bond to support open space lands, restore the natural environment and create public access opportunities, according to a Midpen press release. Midpen is now seeking individuals to provide oversight of the funds collected and expended through Measure AA.
Currently, there are three vacancies on the seven-member oversight committee. To qualify, applicants must reside in Midpen’s jurisdiction, which includes parts of Santa Clara, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. The committee meets several times a year.

Volunteer opportunities for boys
Registration is now open for the MVLA Service League of Boys, a philanthropic club for parents and sons. The club promotes educational and charitable activities, fosters community connections and strengthens parent-son relationships, according to the organization’s website.
The club partners with nonprofits to support volunteer activities. Past activities have included organizing food donations, taking care of animals and hosting community events, according to Henri Smit, a SLOB executive board member. Members can choose how and when they wish to serve from a monthly distribution list of volunteer opportunities, Smit said in an email.
Membership is open to 7th-12th grade boys and their guardians living in Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, or those who attend schools in those areas. Sons are members while parents are mentors.
The service year runs from Aug. 1 through July 31, according to the website. Annual dues are $75 for each member, and the open enrollment period for registration and renewal ends Sept. 30.
