Museum seeks volunteers
The San Mateo County Historical Association is seeking volunteers to serve as docents and greeters at the San Mateo County History Museum, the association announced last week.
At an orientation session Oct. 24, potential volunteers can learn more about the roles, meet existing volunteers and get a preview of the “History Museum’s forthcoming new venues,” according to the event announcement. Directly after the session, guests can stick around and see a museum program in action, as the museum’s Courthouse Docket talk series at 1 p.m. will feature a presentation about the history of the Devil’s Slide region near Pacifica.

TheatreWorks workshops
This fall, TheatreWorks SIlicon Valley is offering a variety of theater workshops for older teens and adults.
The workshops are led by professional actors, dancers and other artists, and the lineup features: freestyle and spoken-word performance (Oct. 3 and 10); dance and creative movement (Oct. 7-28); comedy sketch writing with comedy sketch troupe Killing My Lobster (Oct. 19-Dec. 7); neurodiversity-friendly improv (Oct. 10; auditioning for the stage (Oct. 11-21) and Shakespeare study (Dec. 8-22).
For those who might not be planning to be on stage, but would still like to learn something new in the company of fellow theater lovers, TheatreWorks will also host a series of Directed Readings workshops (Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6) that will explore how to analyze a play’s themes, historical context and more.

Cinequest Community Nights
South Bay-based independent film festival Cinequest is teaming up with movie theater Alamo Drafthouse Mountain View for a series of gatherings to watch and discuss films, the organization announced this week, with the first event scheduled for Oct. 5. Cinequest’s Community Nights invite film fans to meet up with members of the Cinequest team and other community members for socializing over no-host drinks and snacks, then watch a film, and if they wish, also hang out after the screening to talk about it.
Guests purchase their own movie tickets, and can choose between two featured screenings — this month, that’s 2006’s “Casino Royale” or the 1993 film “Ninja Scroll” — or any other film currently showing at the theater. Cinequest, which hosts a film festival every spring, plans to hold community nights monthly.
