A Night of Legends in New Orleans
Can’t make it to the Crescent City this winter? Listeners can still find some New Orleans flavor locally. On the second evening, Jan. 17, the quartet is joined by special guest guitarist and vocalist Alvon Johnson.
Jan. 16-17, seatings at 5 and 8 p.m., Meyhouse, 640 Emerson St., Palo Alto; general admission $48; meyhousejazz.com.
Houseplants
Little Green a Plant Bar is known for its literal houseplants, so it makes perfect sense as a venue for a performance by a music group called Houseplants. The San Francisco-based quintet takes influences from jazz, funk, synth-pop and rock and features Joshua Yi on drums; Shangyu Hsu on saxophone, synths, keys and vocoder; Chili Corder on guitar; Jingru Wang on synth and keys; and Noah Mogar on bass. Little Green’s retail shop is open for 30 minutes before and after its concerts, and BYOB is allowed and encouraged.
Jan. 16, 8 p.m., Little Green a Plant Bar, 1101 Main St., Redwood City; donations suggested; eventbrite.com.
‘Blues’ by Samuray Akarvardar
The work of abstract figurative artist Samuray Akarvardar is currently featured in “Blues,” an exhibition at the Main Gallery. Her playful and poetic figures reflect “the modern human’s relationship to the past” and draw inspiration from sources including yoga poses, ancient figurines and historical imagery, the galley’s website states. Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, Akarvardar currently lives in the Bay Area. According to her website, she traces her fascination with ancient figurines and classical Greek sculptures to her childhood family trips to Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, where she saw and became interested in the ruins of past civilizations.
A reception takes place Jan. 24, 5-7 p.m. Show runs through Feb. 22, Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment, The Main Gallery, 883 Santa Cruz Avenue, Suite 1, Menlo Park; free; themaingallery.org.
