On a crisp October morning in Portola Valley, neighbors will soon fan out across their own neighborhoods to gather litter that too often drifts into our streets and parks. This October 11th project is novel – a DIY approach in your own hood to combating our “take-away/throw away” culture – much of it single-use food packaging.

Top items removed in San Mateo County’s most recent Coastal Cleanup events include food wrappers, plastic bottles, caps, foam fragments, and single-use plastics – the kind of disposable food-ware we throw away without thinking. In 2023 alone, more than 27,049 pounds of trash and recyclables were hauled out across over 30 sites, with volunteers combing 137 miles of shoreline and neighborhood corridors.

Pick up your cleanup gear from the wonderful folks at Portola Valley Hardware – offering a 10% discount on event cleanup supplies – picker uppers, gloves, buckets, etc…
