Mountain View’s Costco evacuated customers on Tuesday morning after a piece of equipment struck a sprinkler pipe, causing it to leak water.

Dispatchers received a report at 9:41 a.m. from the alarm on the sprinkler system at the warehouse store, located at 1000 N. Rengstorff Ave., according to Mountain View Fire Department spokesperson Robert Maitland. Crews arrived on scene shortly thereafter and shut off the sprinkler system’s flow of water, he said.

There were concerns about a possible gas leak because of the odor of the water coming out of the pipe, but fire crews confirmed that this was not the case, Maitland said. They determined that because the water had been sitting stagnant in the pipes for a long time, it smelled “musty,” he added.

The fire crews helped staff remove water from the floor using large squeegees and a vacuum before departing.

A Costco employee told the Voice that they could not provide details about the incident, but confirmed that the store allowed customers to return at approximately 11:30 a.m.

  1. Sprinkler systems are cool when you have a fire, but otherwise a pain in the neck. I wonder what the cost/benefit is? For instance, if this had been in a residence, floors and walls would have sustained water damage…
