Earlier this year, Mountain View’s Oktoberfest faced an uncertain future as Stein’s Beer Garden was in jeopardy of closing. A new owner has since taken over the establishment, but is not planning to co-host Oktoberfest as in years past.

Instead, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce is stepping up as the sole organizer of Oktoberfest and continuing the annual tradition, with hopes of relocating the popular event from its usual spot by Stein’s to just around the corner.

The Chamber is looking to host the event on Castro Street between Mercy Street and Church Street as well as at portions of Pioneer Park, according to a City Council report. The two-day event has historically been held in late September or early October, featuring German beers and food as well as traditional Oktoberfest music and dancing.

Since it would be a new location, the Chamber is asking for a special event permit and sound amplification permit from the city. The request is coming before the City Council as a consent item at their Tuesday, June 24 meeting.

If the request is approved, portions of downtown Mountain View will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 a.m. through Sunday, Oct. 12 at 10 p.m.

The Chamber will pay $26,000 to the city for the use of its services, which includes police, fire, streets and community services. After this year, the permits for Oktoberfest will be reviewed administratively and are not expected to return to the City Council for approval, the report said.

Mountain View has held annual Oktoberfest events since 2013 although it was on hiatus for three years during the pandemic. The event resumed again in 2023.
