A 22-year-old Mountain View man was arrested at home after a police stand-off early Wednesday morning for attempting to break into his neighbor’s apartment armed with a knife, according to a statement from the Mountain View Police Department.

Officers received a call around 12:25 a.m. on Nov. 19 reporting that a man was trying to break into an apartment on the 1000 block of El Monte Avenue. The residents told police that the suspect was trying to get into their apartment through a shared wall. They did not know the man prior to the incident, police said.

When officers arrived, they saw a man holding a knife. Officers tried to engage with the suspect, but he refused to cooperate and barricaded himself in his apartment, police said.

Around 1 a.m., the police department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team and Crisis Negotiations Team were called in to provide help. After several hours of negotiation, the suspect was arrested at 5:50 a.m., according to police.

Police spokesperson Monica Leon told the Voice that no firearms were discharged during the incident but noise flash diversionary devices, also known as “flash bangs,” were used.

Several apartment residents were asked to evacuate or shelter in place as a precautionary measure during the incident, police said.

The suspect sustained minor injuries prior to his arrest and received medical care by paramedics before being transported to Stanford Hospital. There were no other reported injuries, according to police.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary, brandishing a weapon and vandalism, police said.
