Bay Area Air District officials announced a “Spare the Air Alert” for Tuesday because of anticipated pollution levels.
Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy, as high inland temperatures combine with vehicle exhaust to create elevated concentrations of ozone, especially in the Santa Clara Valley, according to Air District officials.
Temperatures are expected to peak in the 90s to near-100s in many inland areas, according to the National Weather Service.
Ozone, also called smog, can cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain, can trigger asthma, inflame the lining of the lungs and worsen bronchitis and emphysema. Ozone pollution is particularly harmful for young children, older people and people with respiratory and heart conditions.
When a Spare the Air Alert is issued, outdoor exercise should be done during the morning hours when smog levels are lower.
To help improve air quality, people are encouraged to work remotely, take transit, walk or bike to their destinations and drive less, according to Air District Officials.
