A small fire broke out in a Google office building Tuesday evening after an electrical device overheated and ignited a workbench, causing structural damage to the building but no injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.
Mountain View dispatchers received a 911 call at 5:18 p.m. on Aug. 13, reporting a fire inside an electrical room of an office building at 2081 Steirlin Court. When fire crews arrived, 25 Google employees had already exited the building, according to the statement.
Firefighters entered the two-story building and saw smoke coming from a computer lab, and that a sprinkler head was actively flowing water. Firefighters turned off the sprinkler and removed a burnt office chair from the building, according to the statement.
Fire crews then checked to make sure that the fire was completely extinguished and used salvage techniques to remove smoke and water from the office space, without damaging sensitive electrical equipment. They also replaced the sprinkler head and recharged the sprinkler system before leaving, according to the statement.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire was from an overheated electrical device that had been left unattended and ignited on a workbench. The estimated damage to the building and its contents was $200,000, according to the statement.
In January, a malfunctioning battery that had been left on a chair in a computer lab caused a fire in another Google office building at 2011 Stierlin Court in Mountain View.
