A Saturday night fire in Mountain View has temporarily displaced five residents and caused $60,000 in damages, but no injuries were reported.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at 9:27 p.m. Saturday reporting an appliance fire in a multifamily condominium complex in the 2000 block of Latham Street, according to a Mountain View Fire Department press release issued Sunday.

The building’s occupants had already self-evacuated by the time firefighters arrived on scene at 9:32 p.m. Fire crews found water flowing from two sprinkler heads and smoke coming from a condo on the second floor of a three-story housing complex.

Firefighters stopped the flow of water from the sprinkler heads and worked to protect the property from further damage and remove water from the building, according to the press release.

Firefighters determined that a combined washing machine/dryer was the origin of the fire, but the cause of the fire is not currently known, according to the press release. Two residents in the affected condominium, along with two adults and one minor in the condominium below, were relocated due to smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross was on scene to assist affected residents, who arranged for temporary housing with neighbors and at a local hotel while their condos are being repaired. The Mountain View Police Department also provided traffic control for 90 minutes while fire units and equipment were on scene.

The fire department also shared tips for dryer safety with the condo complex’s homeowners’ association, which can be found here.
