Firefighters responded to a second floor residential fire on the 200 block of Leslie Court at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. All residents of the single-family townhome self-evacuated and neighboring residences were not affected.

Flames were quickly extinguished preventing the fire from spreading further into the home, according to the Mountain View Fire Department. Local police provided traffic control in the area for two hours while firefighters remained on the scene.

Firefighters determined that the fire started on the second floor bedroom but the cause is still under investigation. The house faced about $20,000 in damages. Residents received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program.

Temporary housing was coordinated for all eight residents of the household including four adults and four children due to the smoke damage.

The fire department conducted a thorough evaluation of the bedroom by cutting open the ceiling and walls to ensure all flames were extinguished. Thermal imaging cameras also showed the fire did not spread behind the drywall and into the attic.

The Mountain View Fire Department provides the following tips for the public to stay protected in case of a house fire:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each bedroom. They should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.
  • Make an escape plan, discuss with everyone in the home and practice the plan twice a year
  • If a fire occurs, leave the residence, stay out and call for help.
