Two Peninsula sushi restaurants lost their Michelin stars at Monday night’s 2024 California Michelin Guide Ceremony

Sushi Yoshizumi in San Mateo and Sushi Shin in Redwood City, both with one Michelin star in 2023, now are ranked as Michelin Recommended. The only other restaurant in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to lose a ranking was Bird Dog in Palo Alto, which lost its Michelin recommended status and is not listed in the 2024 guide.

Two Peninsula restaurants were newly recognized as Michelin Recommended: Navio in Half Moon Bay and Kan Kiin in Daly City. Navio is located within The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, where the ceremony was held.

There are now six Michelin starred restaurants within San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Chez TJ in Mountain View, Plumed Horse in Saratoga, Protégé in Palo Alto, Selby’s in Atherton, The Village Pub in Woodside and Wakuriya in San Mateo all retained their Michelin stars.

Across the state of California, three new restaurants earned two Michelin stars and one new green star (given to restaurants with a focus on sustainability), seven restaurants earned one Michelin star for the first time and 10 restaurants gained a Bib Gourmand ranking.

The 2024 Michelin Guide lists 22 restaurants from San Mateo County (including two that have one star, one with a Bib Gourmand ranking and 19 Michelin Recommended) and 21 from Santa Clara County (including three restaurants with one star, five with Bib Gourmand rankings and 13 Michelin Recommended). Out of all the cities in both counties, Palo Alto has the most Michelin awards with one One Michelin Star restaurant (Protégé), one Bib Gourmand restaurant (iTalico) and five Michelin Recommended restaurants (Ettan, Evvia, Tamarine, Vina Enoteca and Zola).

Michelin stars are the highest accolade, with three stars being the maximum a restaurant can receive. Michelin Bib Gourmand is a ranking that began in 1955 and is given to restaurants with exceptional food at moderate prices (where a three-course meal costs under $40). Michelin Recommended is still an honor, but it’s not at the level of a star or the Bib Gourmand ranking.
