With the planned closure of a downtown parking lot in January to make way for the construction of affordable housing, the back-up location for the Mountain View Farmers Market is going to be changing in the new year.

The Sunday farmers market typically operates out of the downtown Caltrain station parking lot, but moves to Lot 12, across from Mountain View City Hall, on days when the 49ers have home games. The switch to Lot 12 opens up parking at the transit station for people who use light rail to get to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

However, Lot 12 will permanently close next month, with construction set to begin in the first quarter of the year to turn the city-owned lot into a five-story affordable apartment building.

With the closure of Lot 12, and the Super Bowl set to be held at Levi’s Stadium in February, the city identified two other, nearby lots as alternatives for the farmers market.

The City Council is set to vote at its Dec. 16 meeting to approve the temporary closure of Lots 4 and 8 to vehicles on no more than four Sundays between Jan. 5 and Feb. 8. The lots are located across from each other on Hope Street, between Villa Street and West Evelyn Avenue, near the transit station.

The two lots would close to vehicles from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on certain Sundays in January if the 49ers play in the postseason, as well as on Feb. 8 for the Super Bowl.

The California Farmers’ Market Association would pay the city $430 per event for the use of the lots. The association would also cover the cost of setting up the farmers market, including posting “no parking” signs, according to the council report.

After next year though, it may not be feasible to use Lots 4 and 8 for the farmers market. In 2016, the city selected RGC Mountain View, a commercial real estate company, to develop Lot 4 into a hotel and Lot 8 into an office building with ground floor retail. If the project moves forward, then the city would need to identify other temporary sites for the farmers market, according to the council report.

  1. So Mountain View is losing 3 parking lots in 2026? How many parking spots are we losing? What’s the new plan for where we can park? Loss of parking seems worthy of its own news article.
