The Old Mountain View Neighborhood holds its annual ice cream social this Sunday at Mercy-Bush Park, and this year the event celebrates the downtown's historic Immigrant House.
From noon to 3 p.m. on Aug. 18 there will be live musical performances, various games, prizes, and of course, ice cream.
Marina Marinovich, who has been working to save the "Immigrant House" - the tiny historic home at 466 Bryant St. that was recently saved from destruction and moved but still needs restoration -- says there will be numerous Immigrant House-related activities, including storytelling and models of the home for kids to build. A woman who lived in the home during World War II may also be in attendance.
"It's going to be incredible," Marinovich said of the event.

I saw a representative model of the immigrant house at a Mtn View event and was astonished to see that the flags on the model immigrant house are all for European countries. Why aren't there African, Asian, South American countries represented? Mountain View has had immigrants from many countries, not just European ones.

Hi Cordelia, look again!
We have South America, Australia and many more new countries added. A cool story: The MV General Store's landlord is from Taiwan so he brought a Taiwanese flag and we put it up! There are 196 countries in the world; I don't think we can get them all on the roof, but we welcome any and all that will fit.
Please bring us any country's flag that you would like to see added, we would be happy to place it up on the float for you.
Tina, the MV General Store's owner will have some at the store as well to buy. Support our local owners. Hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social it really begins at 1pm!

My family and I lived in the Pearson house from 1952 until ca 1973, next door to what's now called the immigrant house. People who went to MVHS in the 60s and 70s (when it was downtown) thought of that house as the Villasenor house, though it never belonged to us.
The Hernandez family lived in the Immigrant house then so I know there should be a Puerto Rican flag on that house.

Excited about Immigrant House and the Ice Cream Social! The flags decorating the top were a beautiful touch and were flags that people happened to have available. The message was meant to symbolize diversity and ALL flags to be welcomed.Immigrant House is also a symbol of our diverse backgrounds and the contributions every culture makes to the Mountain View Community.Excited also to see in this post someone who lived in Pearson House! It would be a joy if you can attend the Ice Cream Social!
