Bike ride event on El Camino Real

On Aug. 12, residents can participate in a rare opportunity to bike as a group along El Camino Real, a busy road not normally used by bicyclists.

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is hosting its third annual El Camino Real ride from Santa Clara Caltrain station to Mountain View Caltrain station. The route is 9.5 miles long, but will be broken up by free ice cream stops along the way.

The plan is to meet at the Santa Clara Caltrain station between 10 to 10:30 a.m. and safely take over the rightmost travel lane as a group while following all traffic laws. The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition said the intention of the event is to not block traffic like San Francisco’s Critical Mass.

“El Camino Real is a major thoroughfare connecting the hearts of cities from San Jose to San Francisco and beyond. Many businesses and future residences are situated on El Camino Real. Unfortunately, this road is made for cars — multiple car lanes but no bike lane. Some cities have plans to install bike lanes. We need to advocate for safe bikeways and have them done soon,” the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition said in a statement for the event.

Participants can reserve a spot for this free event here.
