Mountain View’s first-ever chief information officer, Roger Jensen, is slated to retire in March after serving in the role for more than 12 years.
Jensen came to work for the city in January 2014 after a career in the private sector. As “chief information officer/information technology director,” Jensen modernized Mountain View’s technology infrastructure, the city said in a Dec. 1 press release announcing his retirement. Jensen’s last day is set for March 20, 2026.
“As a resident of Mountain View, I have the good fortune of both providing and receiving the exceptional services that the city delivers,” Jensen said in the press release. “As a team, the IT Department is the glue that delivers many services from all departments to our community.”
Mountain View will start looking for Jensen’s replacement in mid-December, according to the press release. When asked what the city will be looking for in a new CIO/IT director, spokesperson Lenka Wright said that information would be available once the recruitment process begins.
During his tenure, Jensen expanded Wi-Fi services across downtown, improved the city’s cybersecurity systems and has been working on developing a policy on the city’s use of artificial intelligence, the press release said. Jensen also helped build and launch ePermitsMV, an online platform that residents can use to submit and track building permits.
“Over the past decade, we have witnessed significant technological advancements that have transformed the way we work, and our talented IT team was ready to turn these challenges into opportunities,” Jensen said in the press release.
City Manager Kimbra McCarthy highlighted Jensen’s work during the COVID-19 pandemic, which included helping employees switch from desktop to laptop setups and creating virtual and hybrid meeting support for the City Council and other public bodies.
“Roger consistently elevated our technology during his time with the city, and he will be greatly missed by all of us,” McCarthy said in the press release.
Before working for the city, Jensen served in leadership roles at various technology companies, including a position as senior vice president of technical operations at AlphaDetail, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology research consulting company, according to his LinkedIn page. Jensen declined to be interviewed for this article.
