Here are the latest culinary happenings in this Silicon Valley hot spot

The biggest culinary takeaway from my two weeks in China is bones and beans. Bones, in that all meat and fish is served naturally with their bones. Beans, in that nearly every dessert had beans in it.
I knew that Chinese food in China would be different from that in the United States, but I didn’t realize just how stark the contrast would be. I tried donkey, loach, black chicken feet, vegetarian sea cucumber, pig ear, jellyfish and a host of other proteins typically not found on American menus. I even had a pu’er latte topped with cheese foam and, believe it or not, meat.
With so many new foods down the gullet, it was only fitting that upon my return, a cafe specializing in beverages made from bone broth opened (yay, more bones!). More on beef-bone-infused matchas in What I’m Eating.

These 8 new eateries are coming to downtown Palo Alto
Downtown Palo Alto’s dining scene is constantly shifting, with old businesses shuttering and new ones moving in. With recent closures of popular restaurants such as Son & Garden and Sushirrito, new eateries are set to take their place. Here are eight restaurants joining the neighborhood.


Peninsula-based restaurant weeks, a fine-dining institution closes and a highly anticipated Japanese cafe and marketplace opens

- Two upcoming restaurant weeks: Flavors of the Peninsula begins tomorrow and lasts through May 3, and Restaurant Week at Marsh Manor starts Thursday and ends May 9.
- Chez TJ, a fixture of the fine-dining scene in Mountain View and known for launching the careers of famous chefs, has permanently closed after more than 40 years.
- Peet’s Coffee has reopened its downtown Palo Alto cafe following a closure that began in January.
- Rick’s Ice Cream in Palo Alto is hosting a Spring Fling Flavor Day Saturday with a free sample scoop, 10% off all day, a raffle and more.
- Japanese cafe, marketplace and deli concept Yutori opened Friday in Palo Alto. Its sit-down restaurant has yet to open.
- Shyr Wines recently opened a tasting room and wine bar in downtown Saratoga.
- Dough Zone Dumpling House is coming to the former Patxi’s Pizza at The Pruneyard in Campbell.
- Two San Jose Vietnamese coffee shops are making their way to Sunnyvale: Tram Cream Coffee recently opened, and Arisan Tea & Coffee House is coming soon.
- Palo Alto matcha cafe Ryokucha Cafe is celebrating its grand opening on Saturday.
- Palmetto Superfoods is coming to the former Boba Guys in downtown Los Gatos.
- Thai restaurant Mahasan recently opened in downtown San Mateo.
- Downtown San Mateo Boba Day is Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. with boba specials, free activities and prizes.
- Taning, a Chinese fruit tea chain, is soon expanding to Los Altos, according to a recent Instagram post.


Bone broth beverages at Trad Bone Broth

When I first spoke with Jonathan and David Kim about their bone broth beverages, I was skeptical. The brothers make drinks you’d find at a typical cafe, but instead of a caffeine jolt, you’re getting collagen and glutamine from slow-simmered beef bones. And at $11-$15 per beverage, it’s a pretty pricey commitment.
But when the Kims gave me a sample of their chocolate sea salt broth, my skepticism gave way to amazement. It tasted exactly like chocolate milk. My brain wanted to hate it, but my tastebuds loved it.
Intrigued, I tried three other varieties: kimchi, matcha and sweet serenity. The kimchi broth was deeply savory, with a nice spice and tanginess that felt warming and comforting. The matcha was mind-boggling: It didn’t taste like broth at all. It was creamy, sweet, foamy and matcha-forward. The sweet serenity was the sweetest of the beverages, tasting like steamed coconut milk with lavender and honey.
While I can’t say I’ll be drinking bone broth beverages on the regular (the price is a bit too high for me), it’s definitely worth trying.
