All three stories this week have ties to nature and plants. Angela Swartz has a roundup of the latest outdoor recreation news around the Peninsula. Find out about a new park in Mountain View, a creek restoration project at a Belmont park, a new trail at a redwoods preserve and more.
Next, Karla Kane profiles Belmont resident and business owner Esterina Gentilcore, who crafts wooden cutting and charcuterie boards in various shapes and sizes using walnut and maple. Esterina started taking woodworking classes in 2021 and found the hobby not only beneficial for her mental health as a new mom with postpartum depression, but also discovered its viability as a business after her neighbors admired her homemade cutting board and wanted one of their own. Her home now doubles as the workspace for her business, Tavolo Studios.
And Adrienne Mitchel writes about a plant-based San Mateo seafood company founded by three generations of women. Jinka sells its vegan calamari, crab poppers, shrimp and sashimi in grocery stores nationwide, and it’s also served at vegan restaurant Twelvemonth — and slated to land on the menu at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Read about the inspiration behind Jinka and where you can buy its products locally in Adrienne’s story.
